Volatility returned to the N.Y. session on Tuesday morning when S&P downgraded both Greece and Portugal. The Euro, already under overnight pressure from a sixth consecutive day of widening CD spreads in Greece, closed the day down 225 pips against the Dollar and over 300 against the Yen. U.S. equity markets took the news pretty harshly as well, closing down nearly 2.5% after making a new 18 month high on Monday. Any chances we had to limp into the weekend after a choppy and frustrating week were completely destroyed when the SEC announced Goldman Sachs is being charged with defrauding investors by misstating and omitting key facts about a financial product tied to subprime mortgages. U.S. equity markets, already primed for a reversal due to overbought conditions and option expiries, took the news quite hard. Evidence has emerged to back up the theory that Apple’s next iPhone iteration will have a 5-megapixel camera. It comes by way of DigiTimes , which reports that supplier OmniVision has received a sizable order for the parts necessary for the improvement.
