As you probably saw, the organisers of the Sydney Olympics suffered the latest in a series of embarrassments this week when the medals for the games were unveiled and found to depict a Roman-style colosseum. The feeling was that the medals should have featured a building more in keeping with the spirit of the modern Olympic movement, such as a pharmaceutical plant. Or failing that, something in keeping with the old Olympic movement, such as a Greek temple.
Swimming is one of those sports that is on the periphery but that does not mean it is lacking in hard-working and good looking athletes. Only in the global spotlight during the Olympics, swimming should be one of the marquee events during the Olympics this summer in Rio de Janeiro. I for one will be watching.

I'm sure I read some story where the Spartans started this tradition after a group of Spartan javalin throwers were defeated by a woman who had been admitted to the competition because she had disguised herself as a man; this humiliated the other competitors, who introduced this practice to keep women out of male-only sporting events. Other sources cite a story that some Greek runner tripping over his loincloth as the origin of this tradition.

The December issue featuring her nude photographs was the second ever sold-out issue of the magazine.
