The University of Cambridge today announced its plans to introduce new admissions assessments for school-leavers inmany of which will need to be completed in advance of interview. Mature students, however, often face significant obstacles in accessing Higher Education, and an increasing number of applicants aged 21 and over are studying independently, or at educational institutions that are not well placed to administer pre-interview assessment. There is also evidence to suggest that some existing admissions tests are less reliable as an indicator of academic potential among older students than they are for school-leavers.

Lucy Macneill came to Kingston University after making a last minute decision to do an undergraduate degree in property planning and development - and enjoyed it so much she decided to stay on to study for a Masters. Lucy, from Fleetwood in Lancashire, had been to university in her teens but didn't complete the course.
