Nursing home abuse and neglect in Vista should be considered an important public health issue of concern to any resident of San Diego County, especially someone with an elderly loved one who resides in a nursing home. Yet common public perceptions about elder abuse often mean that people assume abuse either is physical or emotional, and that neglect also results only in physical or emotional harm. It is extremely important to recognize how sexual abuse and assault are also forms of nursing home abuse that can affect older adults, and understand how to protect a loved one from this form of abuse in a California nursing facility.
When our loved ones are getting older, our main concerns are their well-being and safety. This is especially true when they are moving to a long-term care facility, assisted-living centre or nursing home. Residents are particularly vulnerable to abuse due to their loss of independence, diminished physical and cognitive capacities, and the fact that they live near many strangers including other residents, employees and visitors.
Previous research on the sexual abuse of older adults has revealed few cases of the sexual abuse of older men. The first national study of the sexual abuse of vulnerable adults in facilities, reported in this article, collected data on alleged, investigated, and substantiated cases of sexual abuse. This study revealed 26 cases reported and screened in for investigation concerning the alleged sexual abuse of older men aged 50 and older residing in nursing homes. Cases occurred in five states within a six month time period.

As repulsive as it is to imagine, there are instances where nursing home residents are sexually abused while in the care of skilled nursing facilities. Beyond the reprehensible nature of this transgression, it is also legally actionable. If a family can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that their loved one was sexually abused while at a nursing home, they may find a sympathetic jury that will award financial compensation for the act.
Despite an increasing literature related to elder abuse, sexual abuse of older persons in general and of vulnerable adults living in nursing homes in particular is still sparsely described. The purpose of this study was to assess the state of knowledge on the subject of sexual abuse against older nursing home residents through a literature review. Through several phases of selection of the articles, using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, six articles were chosen for a deeper examination.
No one wants to think about sexual abuse in nursing homes. We all want to think when we place a vulnerable loved one into a nursing home for care, that we are doing the best thing for them. In many cases, a nursing home is the safest and best living situation for those who are not able to care for themselves.
