The Sunset Strip Music Festival, which started as a cluster of shows at the clubs on the strip inhas grown by leaps and bounds into a full fledged, much anticipated yearly event like Bonnaroo or Coachella minus the camping. The 5th annual SSMF took place between August 16th and 18th and as in years past, it featured many different musical acts on various stages spanning different genres, including Marilyn Manson, Bad Religion, Offspring and Black Label Society. The Doors were the early pioneers of the whole Sunset Strip concert experience so this seemed long over due. RZA played to a rabid audience, during a performance that could have almost been mistaken for a cannabis lovers meeting.
From Aug. Last Saturday, the choose-your-own-adventure music festival spilled on to Sunset Boulevard, where organizers had talent on two different stages. The festival aimed to promote The Sunset Strip, honor its history and benefit the area businesses.
I asked him if there were any bands I should check out. He suggested Fartbarf … what?!?! At first I thought he was kidding, but when I checked the artist schedule, I saw that there was a band called Fartbarf and I was already in the venue where they were performing, so I decided to stick around and check them out.
So the onus was on SSMF to redeem itself this year. The horrid heat of the week past was behind us, and the weather relented to an ideal maximum of 80F for the weekend.
It was three days of nonstop music at the fourth annual Sunset Strip Music Festival. On Thursday, August 20, an attendance of media, fans and many notable celebrities, paid tribute to Motley Crue. Their anticipated performance for day three of the festival would keep die-hard fans waiting, but fans were fortunate to be able to enjoy the solid artist lineups on day one and day two.
Saturday was the big day at the Sunset Strip Music Festivalwhen that troublesome street closure would finally pay off for those of us in the mood for some rock. The auspicious name and location of the festival evoke visions of bedazzled, shirtless lead singers flinging blonde hair across the dingy stages of The Whiskey a Go Go and its ilk. But headliners like CommonSlash and The Smashing Pumpkins would be a welcome close to a long day of musical discovery.
